Laissez-faire Leadership Style

Laissez-faire comes from French which means 'permission to act'. Laissez-faire is a type of leadership style that tends to be passive. Leaders with this leadership style will allow others to make decisions. You leave the decision entirely in the hands of the group. However, this does not mean that you should not interfere in the discussion process. In this process, you are more of a supervisor.

In the discussion process, you will give positive and negative impacts of every decision taken. So even if you leave the decision entirely in the hands of the group, you don't let them make decisions without direction. However, like democratic leaders , the  laissez-faire style is not suitable for use at critical times because it will hinder decision making.[1]

Basically, the Laissez Faire leader is a leader who gives great freedom to everyone he leads, both in doing work or in making important decisions.

That way, everyone in the organization can work in a way that he thinks is right, without any pressure or limitations from the leader.

The reason is that the leader will only give very little participation in things like this. Even in some cases, the leader will not be involved in determining the tasks that must be done by his subordinates, which means they can freely choose which tasks to do.

Even when making comments, leaders never intend to regulate or judge their subordinates.

However, in addition to the attitude that seems to not care about the condition of his subordinates, the leader of Laissez Faire is quite demanding that every member is always ready and able to provide information when he asks for it.

Reporting from Asiklearning.com, Handoko and Reksohadiprodjo (1997) describe 3 characteristics of a leader with a Laissez Faire leadership style, namely:

  1. The leader allows his subordinates to govern himself

  2. Leaders only determine policy and general goals

  3. Subordinates can take relevant decisions to achieve goals in any way they deem fit.

With this kind of leadership attitude, chaos is no longer a rare thing in the organization he leads. How not, subordinates do not get any direction from the leader.

Here the real leader cannot be said to actually lead the organization, and even every achievement obtained is never separated from the competent people under him.[2]
