Definition of Leadership

Maybe this word is often spoken and heard, but do we know what it means? When it comes to leadership, it turns out that there is no standard definition that becomes a standard definition that can be used as a reference. So we need to read various reviews from several experts whose actual directions and orientations are not much different, namely the basis of talent, nature, behavior, influence on others, interaction patterns, roles, positions, positions and perceptions of others regarding the validity of leadership itself. As for some definitions from experts, among others;

1. Leadership is the behavior of an individual when he directs the activities of a group towards a common goal (Hemphill & Coons, 1957: 7) 

 


2. Leadership is a type of power relationship characterized by the perception of members that other group members have the right to formulate patterns the behavior of the first member in relation to his activities as a member of the group. (Janda, 1960: 358) 

 
3. leadership is an interpersonal influence that is carried out and directed through the communication process, towards the achievement of certain goals. (Tannenbaum, Weschler & Massarik, 1961: 24) 

 
4. Leadership is an interaction between people in which one of them presents a certain type of information in such a way, so that the other believes that the result will be better if he behaves in the way that is recommended or expected. (Jacobs, 1970: 232) 

 
5. leadership is monitoring and maintaining a structure in expectations and interactions. (Stogdill, 1974: 411) 

 
6. leadership is the addition of influence over and above the mechanism of achievement by routine direction from the organization. (Katz & Kahn, 1978: 528)

 
7. leadership is the process of influencing the activities of an organized group towards the achievement of a goal. (Roach & Behing, 1984: 46)

From the various descriptions above, we can draw a temporary definition that leadership is a process, behavior or relationship that causes a group to act together or cooperate or in accordance with the rules or in accordance with a common goal. Meanwhile, the so-called leader is the person who carries out the process, behavior and relationship.
